Wood Carving Grinder Tools

Re: Spoon carving power tools?Kris, I use my makita die grinder with the 1/4 inch shaft course 3/4'ball nose burr to shape the handle and bowl. You can use the 1/8' shaft type also, which I use on smaller spoons. I use the finer ball nose to smooth a little more. I also like to use the double cut carbide burrs because it leaves a smoother finish. I use cabinet scrapers to take some of the roughness off left by the kutzalls. I hand sand starting with 80 grit working my way up to 220 grit and then use the 3-m pads to get really smooth.

That's one way I do it. Will post more later, gotta eat my breakfast right now! Re: Spoon carving power tools?Kris:If you have a rotary tool larger than a Dremel, then yes, get the 1/4 inch shaft version with either 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch ball. For a smoother surface, Monster brand carbide will give you a smoother one.But.while the Kutzall will rarely 'dig in' and run up the wood towards your hand, the Monster brand will frequently (at least in my experience with one in my Dremel). I wear a leather glove on my holding hand, so it hasn't hurt me, yet, but it's a scary burr to use. Having used both, I prefer the Kutzall, for safety reasons. Another advantage to the Kutzall is you can use it in forward or reverse, if your motor can do that.Claude. Re: Spoon carving power tools?Kris, Claude is right about the control of the different burrs.I have a different brand of burrs than monster brand, same concept though.

When I use my die grinder with any kind of burr, I secure my wood in my little black and decker vise and hold on to it with both hands(the tool) so's not to loose control. If I'm stuck inside to carve(bad weather), I rough out spoons with just a simple coping saw. I also have a wecheer handpiece for my dremel and the gouges and chisels that I use also. I think it's about 40 bucks now. There's so many options for power carving, it's easy to go over board on the tools.

I even have an arbortech professional woodcarving attachment on my angle grinder that I use outside to rough out spoons.I don't think arbortech meant it for that! LOL All in all though for me the most versatile burr shape is the ball nose because the straight part is good for the handle and the ball part is good to do the bowl.
