Too Tough To Die is without a doubt the most underrated Ramones album ever. This album has everything that makes the Ramones.well.RAMONES!
Production value is pretty tight, rich and enjoyable, thanks to the wonderful studio producers Ed Stasium and Tommy Ramone. Lyrically this album goes beyond what the Ramones had written before, just as Chasing The Night and Danger Of Love is a new yet interesting take of professional song writing. Yet, the punk songs are still there, and oh boy are they punk as fuck.
Tracks like Mama's Boy, Wart Hog, Danger Zone and Human Kind are fun and enjoyable little Ramones songs.Musically, this is the Ramones most diverse album in sound. People often say this album is the Ramones cross between Hardcore Punk, which is right of course!
But to me, I can see more than just hardcore punk. If you listen to it closely, you can sense a bit of New Wave (Chasing the Night, Howling At The Moon) and Post Punk (Planet Earth 1988 and Danger Of Love).
Ramones Too Tough To Die Blogspot Musical
This album is a mix of everything that made punk so great in the late 70s-mid 80s.This album has it all, and I would recommend it to anyone that has a general love or nostalgia for punk music.
Let's talk Too Tough to Die. It's one of my favorite Ramones albums and often gets overlooked in favor of their seventies output.Reasons why Too Tough to Die is awesome. The return of Tommy Ramone as producer. In essence, it's a reunion of the original four members. The first appearance of Richie Ramone on drums. Ramones songs were suddenly faster!. Dee Dee gets to sing on two songs!.
Durango '95 would wind up being the opening number to countless Ramones gigs. From what I understand, the album didn't sell very well in 1984, despite being praised as a 'comeback album.' Anyone else love this underrated Ramones gem?
Excellent album, and in fact, one of their more consistent albums. An almost forgotten song - 'No Go', one of my favorite Ramones tunes. Richie was their best drummer, but I'm not even talking in terms of technique (which is obvious), but he actually fit the band so well.Throughout the years I've heard plenty of crap about this and the next two not being in the spirit of the band, which is an argument that has more to do with scene politics than with anything related to music or anyone's enjoyment of it and is best left ignored (which I gues I've failed to do here).Dennis, I enjoy the blog, but I'd like to see you post more outside the context of it. Click to expand.Well, I basically agree with you. I've never understood the whole 'comeback' narrative for Too Tough To Die. I think Pleasant Dreams is a great album. Subterranean Jungle is weaker, but it's not horrible. As for Too Tough To Die. I think the attempts at metal and hardcore sound forced and contrived. I think Richie is 'too good' a drummer for The Ramones.
He lacks the idiosyncracies that make Tommy or Marky's playing interesting, and his technical competence sounds mechanical and bland when blended with the simplicity of The Ramones sound. And as others have noted, the album is unbalanced, lacking enough of the Joey pop sensibility. I find it an uneven album. Certainly better than what followed, but hardly in the same league as their best stuff.
